Diplomate
American Board of Orthodontics
Though Dr. Gaworski can enhance a smile with orthodontics no matter your age, we achieve the greatest success in least amount of time with patients who are in early adolescence. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that an initial orthodontic evaluation occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems, like crooked teeth, or no later than age seven.
By age seven, the first adult molars erupt, establishing the back bite. During this time, Dr. Gaworski can evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. For example, the presence of erupting incisors can indicate a possible overbite, open bite, crowding, or gummy smile. At this early age, a child may not need orthodontic treatment, but vigilant exams can anticipate the most advantageous time to begin teeth straightening.
What are the benefits of early orthodontic evaluation?
With early evaluation, we accomplish timely detection of problems, such as crooked teeth or malocclusion. Prudent intervention guides growth and development, preventing serious problems later. Dr. Gaworski recommends early orthodontic treatment, like teeth straightening with braces, because young patients have a greater opportunity for more effective treatment. If orthodontic intervention is not yet necessary, we will carefully monitor your child’s progress and determine the ideal time to initiate future treatment.
